Subspecies and Distribution.
Larus minutus N Scandinavia, Baltic republics and W Russia to W Siberia, also sporadically in W and C Europe, and casually in N America. Winters mostly S and W of breeding range.

Descriptive notes.

Smallest gull, with broad rounded wings. 24-30 cm, 90-160 g, wingspan 70-76 cm.
Characteristic blackish underwing, head black, with no white eye-crescents. Neck, tail and underparts white, breast often with pink flush. Mantle, back and upperwings pale grey, wings with white trailing edge. Primaries paler grey white tips. Underwing blackish, with white trailing edge. Bill dark red to reddish black. Legs red.
Non-breeding adult has white head with dark cap and ear spot.

Habitat.

Breeds mainly inland, from subarctic to temperate forest and steppe zone, at freshwater lakes, river valleys, marshes and bogs with abundant vegetation. Locally at coastal lagoons, nests on sandbands, in reedbeds and in marsh vegetation.
After breeding, coastal areas, lagoons, sandy beaches, mouths of streams and rivers.

Food and Feeding

Mostly invertebrates, midges, beetles and dragonflies. Mainly insectivorous when breeding and on migration. Sometimes fish.
Feeds by walking and swimming, hovers in air and foot-patters on surface. Also feeds tern-like by surface dipping. Flying into wind and dropping to seize insects from surface of water.

Breeding.

Jun-Jul. Breeds in small colonies or subcolonies, or as scattered individuals. Often nests with other species.
Nest a shallow depression with added grass or reeds, sited on ground in wet vegetation on or adjacent to water, or floating at edge of emergent vegetation. 2-3 eggs, incubation 24 days.
Chick grey buff, spotted black on crown and back, unmarked whitish below. First breeding at 2-3 years.

Movements.

After breeding gathers in small flocks, often associating with Common Black-headed Gulls and Black Terns. W population winters along coast, and slightly offshore, from Irish Sea and the Baltic to Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Seas, and off Nw Africa. Large numbers at Nile Delta.
W Siberian population migrates through Aral and Caspian Seas to the Mediterranean, where some overlap with more westerly breeders. Movements of easternmost population uncertain, probably migrates to E China.

Status and Conservation

Not globally threatened.

Israel.

In Israel subspecies Larus minutus. Common winter visitor and uncommon migrant, in north and central lawlands, near Mediterranean coasts.
