Subspecies and Distribution.
S. o. meena W Siberia to W Altai, S to Turkestan, Iran, Afghanistan, Himalayas to W Nepal. Winters in India. S. o. orientalis C Siberia through Transbaikalia, Amurland to Kuril Is, Japan and Korea, and S through China to Himalayas, N Assam to Hainan and N Vietnam. Winters in S and E Asia. S. o. stimpsone Ryukyu Is to Senkaku Is. S. o. orii Taiwan. S. o. Erythrocephala Peninsular India. S. o. agrcola NE India E to Myanmar and SC China. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.34 cm, 165-270 g, wingspan 55 cm. Forehead bluish grey merging into brownish grey with a rufous wash on nape and pinkish on face.Throat pale buff merging into greyish pink on neck and breast, a black patch on side of neck, each feather tipped with grey. Belly pinkesh buff, ventral regions whitish and undertail coverts pale grey, hindneck dark grey feathers with rufous buff edgings. Wing coverts, scapulars and inner secondaries with dark centres more extensive than in S. turtur. Primaries black with pale edges. Rump and underwing dark bluish grey. Race stimpsoni has darker underparts, and orii duller than nominate. Race erythrocephala smaller, has very rufous underparts, a rich pinkish rufous head and neck and a deep rusty pink breast. Race meena brighter than nominate, with rufous fringes on wing coverts, belly and undertail coverts. Terminal tail band white. Habitat.Wide variety of habitats ranging from boreal to tropical forests. Occurs in sparse woodland, scrub and wooded farmland bordering cultivated fields. Has been found as high as 2500 m and up to 4000 m in Nepal.Food and FeedingFeeds on cereals and pine seeds, use to be raids paddyfields, also herbs, bamboo shoots and green shoots of various plants.Most feeding is on the ground. Breeding.May-Aug in N parts of range, Nov-Feb in S India. Flimsy nest of twigs placed in a sapling, scrubby bush or bamboo clump, with most nests 2-4 m above ground.2 white eggs, incubation 16 days. Movements.North Asian populations, from Siberia to Japan and Kuril Is migrate S to winter in S and E Asia from India to S and E Chuba and S Japan.Generally resident in S Asia, but some populations are migrate S to Peninsular India to overwinter. Status and ConservationNot globally threatened. Widespread and generally common throughout extensive range covering most Asia.Israel.In Israel subspecies S. o. meena. Stragler.
