Subspecies and Distribution.
Cuculus horsfieldi European Russia E throhgh Siberia to Kamchatka, S to Kazakhstan, Mongolia and N China, Korea and Japan. Winters from SE Asia to Australia.

Descriptive notes.

Often regarded as a subspecies of Cuculus saturatus, but the songs of the two are distinct . 30-33 cm, 99 g.
Adults virtually identical to Himalayan Cuckoo C. saturatus, but larger. Eye-ring yellow, iris yellow to brwon, bill black, greenish to yellow at base and cutting edge. Feet yellow.
Differs from Cuculus canorus, in having bend of wing below unbarred white, and often wider and sparser black bars below. Rufous morph female has rump and uppertail coverts barred dark.

Habitat.

Especially coniferous forests, with birch and aspen, sometimes boradleaf forests and thickets.

Food and Feeding

Basically insectivorous, mainly hairy caterpillars, also beetles, hymenoptera and flies.

Breeding.

Brood parasitic. Hosts include Chiffchaff and other warblers, Olive-backed Pipit, Large Crowned Warbler, Bush Warbler and other small songbirds.
Eggs brown or whitish with brown markings. Nestling naked at hatching, orange gape, black gape flanges.
Evicts host's eggs and young.

Movements.

Migratory. Winters in Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, borneo, Philippines, Moluccas to New Guinea and Australia.

Status and Conservation

Not globally threatened. Common in its WPalearctic range and in NE Asia.

Israel.

In Israel subspecies Cuculus horsfieldi. Straggler, ringed in Isral by Shirihai.
