Descriptive notes.Birds from desert regions. 22 cm, 45-55 g, wingspan 55 cn. Upperparts greyish or buffish, thinly streaked blackish-brown, with crown often heavily streaked or spotted rufous. Broad tawny-buff nuchal collar.Wing coverts and scapulars lightly spotted tawny and buff. white throat patch. Underparts parts buff barred brown. Male has large white spot on four outermost primaries and broad white tips to twq outermost tail feathers. Female has smaller wing and tail spots. Iris dark brown. Legs and feet brownish or greyish. Races vary in coloration, amount of spotting on upperparts and wing coverts and extent of white on two outermost tail feathers. Habitat.Typically dry, acacia scrubland near water, tamarisk thickets, sparsely vegetated wadis, dried riverbeds with some water, desert thorn scrub, sandy scrubland and bushy coastal dunes.Food and FeedingInsectivorous. Forages by flitting about after prey, often hunting close to water, also on ground, especially among animal droppings.Breeding.Apr-Jul in Israel and Jordan, May-Sep in Saudi Arabia, Jun-Aug in Somalia and Mar-May in Kenya.No nest, 1-2 eggs laid on bare soil, sand or gypsum, often at base of small thorn bush. Movements.Nominate race probably sedentary. Middle Eastern race tamaricis possibly sedentary and partially migratory.Some may moves SW during Oct-Nov to winter in coastal lowlands of NE Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti and NW Somalia. Autumn vagrants also recorded NE Saudi Arabia and Oman. Return movemens in spring noted Feb-May. Race torridus possibly sedentary and partially migratoru and Socotran race jonesi probably sedentary. Status and ConservationNot globally threatened. Locally common in inhabits areas.Israel.In Israel subspecies C. n. tamaricis. Rare resident and breeding summer vesitor from Bet Shean im north through Jordan River Valley, Dead Sea Depression, southern areas to Eilat. |
