Subspecies and Distribution.
Hirundo aethiopica locally in Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia southwards through Uganda and Kenya to north-eastern Tanzania. Hirundo a. amadoni E Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.14 cm, 12-15 g, wingspan 24-30 cm. Its best field characters are its pale throat and black chest patches.Above glossy blue-black with chestnut foreaead patch, below creamy white, sometimes with slight tinge of rufous on throat. Small black patch on each side of the chest. Tail forked and outer rectrices elongated. Habitat.Found in open grassland, areas of mixed bush and grass and also open woodlands.Most frequent along the Kenya coast where it nests in caves in the sea cliffs. Food and FeedingDiet like other Hirundinidae based on flying insects.Feeds in pairs or small goups, often very low over ground.Breeding.Jul-Aug in Senegambia,Dec-Jan in Guinea, Apr-Oct in Ethiopia. May have two broods, occasionally three.Solitary or in loose groups. Nest built by both sexes, an open cup made of mud pellets and dry grass, rootlets and feathers. 2-4 etts. Incubation probably mostly by female, 14 days. Movements.Chiefly resident and dispersive or partial migrant.
