Movements.

Resident, migratory and dispersive, depending on winter temperatures of breedinggrounds. Some birds winter in tidal estuaries and sheltered bays, but generally farless common in such habitats than other grebes. Frequent records outwith main range, even in unsuitable habitat, indicate considerable capacity for aerial reconnaissance and colonization of new areas.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatened. Widespred and common in most of range, Well sudied areas in Europe show fluctuation in numbers, related mainly to winter conditions.
