Subspecies and Distribution.
Hypocolius ampelinus breeds Middle East, Iran, Iraq, and Arabia. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.23 cm, 38-55 g, wingspan 28-30 cm. Look like and almost as long as but slighter than Great Grey Shrike, with tail proportionately longer and not graduated, and bill without hook.Unique, sleek, long-tailed passerine,with somewhat shrike-like appearance but with behaviour recalling both Waxwing and babbler. Plumage essentially pale grey above and pale isabelline-buff below, with black primaries tipped white and tail tipped black. Male has black face mask extending to nape. Sexes dissimilar, no seasonal variation. HabitatSubtropical and tropical, in more vegetated belts within arid lowlands, level or gently undulating. Often in river valleys fringing desert or semi-desert with patchy or thin scrub, open broad-leaf scrub, groups of trees, irrigated areas, gardens, or palm groves.Food and FeedingMainly fruit, sometimes insects. Searches for food among trees, rarely descending to ground.Noticeably deliberate in feeding movements when perched on bush, stretching and balancing to reach berries with, at times, tail angled well downwards. Chews fruit, rejecting skin and stones, though small stones and pips swallowed and later excreted. Will also fly down from perch like shrike to take insects on ground. Breeding.May-Jun in Iraq. Nest site in bush or low tree, up to 4 m above ground, often well hidden in densest part of bush but may be more exposed in tree.Nest, base of small twigs, with cup of grass and tufts of vegetable down, lined with more down, and sometimes wool and hair. Loosely colonial. 3-4 eggs, sub-elliptical to oval, smooth and rather glossy. White to very pale grey, sometimes forming band, occasionally scattered or sometimes unmarked. Incubation 14-15 days, by both sexes. Movements.Most birds apparently short-distance migrants.Status and ConservationNot globally threatened. Little information on range changes, but in Iraq breeds widely.Israel.In Israel subspecies Hypocolius ampelinus accidental migrant and winter visitor in south Arava and Eilat. |
