Descriptive notes.Pied and Cyprus Pied Wheatears were previously considered conspecific, but owing to clear morphological and geographical differences were recently split into separate species.Male has warmer-toned on underbody than male Oenanthe pleschanka, with cinnamon shade from chest to under tail-coverts. In spring, deeper and more extensively black on chest-sides and back. HabitatApproximately as Pied Wheatear, through warmer temperate and steppe zones, largely in lowland but ranging up to 2000 m.Food and FeedingDiet based on insects.Breeding.Mid Apr and into May. Nest site in hole in rock or bank, under stone. Nest, cup of dry grass and stems, lined with finer grasses, roots, and wool and hair.4-6 eggs, sub-elliptical, smoot and glossy, pale blue to green-blue. Incubation 13-14 days by both sexes. Movements.Leaves Cyprus Aug-Oct, with peak in late Aug and Sep. Passage appears to be on broad front with records from Egypt as far as Syria, Israel and Saudi Arabia.Status and ConservationNot globally threatened. Very common to abundant.Israel.In Israel subspecies Oenanthe cypriaca rare to locally scarce passage migrant, mainly in spring. |
