C. p. podobe Africa. C. p. melanoptera Arabia.

Descriptive notes.

18 cm, 20-22 g, wingspan 23-28 cm, Close in size and structure to Rufous-tailed Scrub-Robin but with longer tail and longer legs.
Sprightly, bush-haunting chat with similar general character to Rufous-tailed Scrub-Robin but all-black except for white tips to under tail-coverts and bold white tips ro graduated outer tail-feathers, last always conspicuous on cocked tail.
Sexes similar, no seasonal variation.

Habitat

Tropical and marginally subtropical, in arid mainly lowland regions from fringe of desert through shrub and acacia savanna, especially on sandy soils into which it probes with bill.
Avoids close stands of trees and banks of rivers, using shrubs rather than trees as song-post and foraging on more or less bare ground, but often under bushes.

Food and Feeding

Diet No information. Forages mainly on ground, probing seemingly bare sand or soil under bushes with some leaf litter.

Breeding.

Feb-Jul in Africa, Mar-Jul in Arbian Peninsula. Nest a ragged flat cup of dry grass, palm fibres twigs and rootlets, lined with hair, wool and fine grass1-2 m up in small palm or palm undergrowth.
Eggs 2-4, pale greenish to greyish-white with olive, grey or reddish-brown speckles.

Movements.

Resident, in both Africa and Arabia. However, a very uncommon nonbreeding visitor to Somalia and to Ethiopia.

Status and Conservation

Not globally threatened.

Israel.

In Israel two subspecies C. p. podobe and C. p. melanoptera occasional to extremely rare local spring and summer visitor in southern Arava.
