Subspecies and Distribution.
Sylvia melanothrax breeds only in Cyprus. Winters Israel and Sinai.

Descriptive notes.

13-14 cm, 10-11 g, wingspan 15-18 cm. Rather small to meduime size warbler, whit general character of Sardinian Warbler and similar plumage in female except for faint throat and breast mottling.
Male has distinctive black and dusky upperparts, white moustachial stripe, underparts mottled black and white, and white edges and tips to wing-coverts and tertials. Eye yellow or brown, surrounded by yellowish bare orbital ring, and white eye-ring.
Sexes dissimilar, little seasonal variation.

Habitat.

Occupies a region with warm dry sunny climate, breeding on scrub-covered coastal plains in maquis. Nesting low down under dense cover, also in mountains. Apparently avoids open ground, including cultivation, as well as dense forests, orange plantations, and wetlands.

Food and Feeding

Little information. Mainly invertebrates. Feed typically by moving along branches of trees and inside bushes to pick off small insects, also often dart from bush to take butterflies from low vegetation.

Breeding.

First eggs laid end of Mar. Nes site, in low scrub 30-110 cm above ground. Nest, cup of grass stems and leaves, bound together with cobwebs, lined with finer grasses and a few hairs, also including cobwebs. Sometimes frail but normally more robust.
4-5 eggs, sub-elliptical, smooth and glossy, very pale green, occasionally whitish, with olive-brown and violet-grey spots, speckles, and fine blotches. Incubation period not recorded, mainly by female.

Movements.

Partial migrant. wintering grounds imperfectly known. vacates breeding grounds above 1000 m. On low ground, less common in winter than summer but more widespread, and found especially along coast. Many migrate, departing mainly late Sip to Oct, apparently heading S-SE towards Israel initially.

Status and Conservation

Not globally threatened. Very common in suitable habitat.

In Israel subspecies Sylvia melanothrax uncommon spring passage migrant over most parts, scarce autumn migrant and winter visitor in S-E desert areas.
