Subspecies and Distribution.
Pterodroma feae Cape Verde Is. and Bugio Is.

Descriptive notes.

30-37 cm; 300-360 g; wingspan 85-95 cm.
White superciliary area highlights dark mask, collar faint.
Juvenile as adult.

Habitat

Marine and pelagic.
Breeds in rocky, mountainous areas, up to 2000 m above sea level, also on steep slopes and vertical cliffs.
Formerly in woodland.

Food and Feeding

Little known, squid and small fish recorded.

Breeding.

Starts Nov in Cape Verde Is. and Jun in Madeira.
Colonial; nests in burrows or rock crevices.
1 egg, fledging mostly in May and until Dec.

Movements.

Disperses over subtropical and tropical waters of N Atlantic, although some birds presnt around breeding islands during much of year
May reach equator regularly, but probably does nor range far into S Atlantic.

Status and Conservation

Rare. Total populaton estimated at few hundred breeding pairs.
On Bugio Is. heavy soil erosion caused by abundant gats and rabbits, possibly affected by significant human exploitation, but this is mainly directed towards other species.

Israel.

In Israel subspecies Pterodroma feae Accidental visitor. One found dead near Eyn Gedi.
