P. l. lherminieri Bahamas, West Indies; formerly Bermuda. P. l. Wetmore SW Caribbean. P. l. suhalaris Galapagos Is. P. l. dichrous C Pacific. P. l. gunax Banks Is in Vanuatu (New Hebrides). P. l. hannermani Bonin and Volcano Is. P. l. bailloni Mascarene Is. P. l. nicolae NW Indian Ocean, from Aldabra to Maldives. P. l. persicus Kuria Muria Is (Arabian Sea). Descriptive notes.27-33 cm: 150-230 g, wingspan 64-74 cm. Slightly larger than P. assimilis,with longer tail,longer, more pointed wings, larger bill and pink legs. Less white on face and more brownish on under-wing. Juvenile as adult. Races separated on slight differences in coloration, measurements and proportions. race persicus slightly large. with longer bill and darker underwing and flanks. Habitat.Marine. Normally in offshore water but also pelagic and near land in vicinity of colonies. Gathers in area of upwelling off SE Arabia. Breeds on oceanic islands, coral atolls and rocky offshore islets, occupying cliffs and earthy slopes.Food and FeedingMainly fish, squid and crustaceans. Prey caught by pursuit-diving and pursuit-plunging, pattering and surface-seizing.Sometimes joins other feeding seabirds, occasionally attends small fishing boats. Breeding.Season and length of cycle variable with locality. Colonial; nests in rock crevices burrows.I egg. Incubation 49-51 days, with stints of 2-10 days. Chicks have greyish down above, white underneath. Brooded for 3-7 days. Fledging 62-75 days. Sexual maturity at c. 8 years. one bird ringed as adult known to have lived 11 years more. Movements.Little known. Adults thought to be largely sedentary. Immatures probably more dispersive. Vagrant to S Africa, Australia and NE Canada.Status and ConservationNot globally threatened. Widespread and locally abundant, with total population of several tens of thousands of breeding pairs. Intense human exploitation in past, which continues in places.
