Subspecies and Distribution.
C. d. diomedea Mediterranean islands.
C. d. borealis WC Portugal to Azores and to Canary Is.
C. d. edwardsii Cape Verde Is.

Descriptive notes.

45-48 cm; 560-730g, borealis 815-950 g; wingspan 100-125 cm. More uniformly pale below than other similar species.
Head more uniformly coloured than C. leucomelos : bill and overall aspect more robust. Can have pale crescent at base of tail. Juvenile as adult. Race borealis larger, with heavier bill;
edwardsii smaller, with longer tail.

Habitat

Marine and pelagic, usually keeping well away from land, except at colonies.
Breeds on barren offshore island, occupying cliffs, caves and boulder fields; sometimes inland on roky slopes.

Food and Feeding

Mostly fish, squid, crustaceans and offal.
Feeds mainly by plunging and surface-seizing. Mainly nocturnal feeder.

Breeding.

Starts Apr. Co,onial; nests in burrowsw rock crevices, natural hollows or cracks.
1 egg; incubation 54 days, chicks have brown down, brooded for 4 days; fledging 97 days. Sexual maturity at 7-13 years

Movements.

Migratory. Mediterranean birds mostly come out into Atlantic where move rapidly S; abundant off South Africa, occurring Nov-May.
Race borealis winters off E coasts of N and S America, and probably in SW Indian Ocean, where species recorded in large numbers.
Race edwardsii also leaves breeding ground, but winter quarters unknown.

Status and Conservation

Not globally threatend. Widespread and locally abundant, with total population numbering a few million birds
Mainly breeds in heavily populated areas and everywhere has suffered exploitation for food or fish bait, predation by introduced mammals, and a series of habitat modifications.
Present location of colonies reflects degree of human pressure.
