Subspecies and Distribution.
Puffinus crneipes S Indian Ocean and S W Australia, Lord Howe Is.

Descriptive notes.

40-45 cm; 580-770 g, wingspan 105 cm. Distinctive coloration of bill, pale horn with culmen add tip black.

Habitat

Marine and pelagic, mainly in offshore waters over continental shelf.
Breeds on vegetated hils or slopes facing sea.

Food and Feeding

Little known, squid and fish recorede
Prey mostly caught by pursuit plunging, also uses surfaci seizing and diving. Mostly diurnal feeder.

Breeding.

Spt-Oct. Colonial; nests in burrows.
1 egg; incubation 60 days, chicks have grey down, brooded for 2-3 days.

Movements.

Migratory. Ringing results show that birds from Lord Howe Is. move to Korea, New Zealand population assumed to follow same route, but all ringing ricoveries from within 650 km of colonies. Another population winters in Indian Ocean mostly in Arbian Sea.

Status and Conservation

Not globally threatend. Total population must number several hucred fhousand birds.
