Descriptive notes.40-50 cm;650-1000 g, wingspan 95-110 cm. All dark except for variable amount of white on underwing. Stocky build. Juvenile as adult.Habitat.Marine, generally occurs in cold offshore and pelagic waters.Breeds on slopes, often covered with dense vegetation, mainly near sea but also inland, up to 1500 m above sea-level. Food and FeedingMainly small shoaling fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, proportions varying with season and locality; fish include anchovies, spawning capelin.Feeds mainly by pursuit-plunging and diving, sometimes also by surface-seizing and hydroplaning Frequently associates in large numbers with other sea birds, especially other Procellariiformes, penguings and tems. Birds sometimes attend trawlers, probably mostly juveniles. Breeding.Starts Oct.Highly colonial; nests in burrows.1 egg; incubation 53-56 days, with stints of 4-9 days; chicks have smoky grey down with paler underparts, brooded for 2-3 days; fledging 85-105 days. Sexual maturity probably at 5-9 years. Movements.Transequatorial megrant. moving into N Pacific and N Atlantic.Large numbers first head into NW sector of respective ocean, then progressively move E following prevailing winds to reach W coasts of N America and Europe late in local summer; many thus complete wide loop before returning to breeding islands. Status and ConservationNot globally threatend. Abundant and widespread, with total population of several million birds.Israel.subspecies in Israel G. a. arctica. Winter visitor along Mediterranean coast, in spring and summer in Gulf of Eilat. |
