P. c. carbo Canada through Greenland, Iceland, Norway to British Is.
P. c. sinensis C and S Europe to India and China.
P. c. hanedae Japan. P. c. maroccanus N.W Africa. P. c. lucidus W.S Africa.
P. c. novaehollandiae Australia, New Zealand and Chatham Is.

Descriptive notes.

35 cm; 400 g, wingspan 90 cm.
Similar to P. puffinus but upperparts paler, less clearly demarcated from pale underparts,with brownish wash, especially on flanks and undertail coverts, in flight feet project beyond shorter tail.
Race mauretanicus larger and often darker below.

Habitat

Marine, generally occurs in cold offshore and pelagic waters.
Breeds on slopes, often covered with dense vegetation, mainly near sea but also inland, up to 1500 m above sea-level.

Food and Feeding

Mainly small shoaling fish and squid.
Feeds mainy by pursuit plungig and pursuit diving.
Forms large feeding flocks. Attends trawlers.

Breeding.

Starts Jan mauretanicus,in Feb yelkouan.
Colonial nesting, in rock crevices or caves.
1 egg, incubation 50 days, chick has slaty grey down, paler underneath.

Movements.

Migratory diurnal and nocturnal; race yelkouan. moves into Black Sea and disperses around Mediterranean. Race mauretanicus, tends to leave Mediterranean moves to the North Sea, but some birds move to S Africa.

Status and Conservation

Not globally threatend. Balearic population small, estimated at 2500 breeding pairs.

In Israel subspecies P. y. yelkouan., winter visitor.
