Descriptive notes.

85 cm; 750 g, wingspan 85 cm.
Small crest. Black bill. As breeding season advances, black of head replaced by bronze or chestnut brown. Non-breeding adult has throat and foreneck pale brown. Juvenile as non-breeding adult, but underbody whitish.

Habitat

Fresh water, including slow flowing rivers, lakes, deltas and other wet lands. Sometimes in brackish or salt water,
Requires emergent trees or reed beds for roosting, testing and nesting.

Food and Feeding

Mainly fish. Feeds by porsuit-diving.
Normally fishes alone.

Movements.

Migratory. Most movements involve short distances, and species sedentary over larg areas.
Migration varies from year to year, but most marked in populations of Black Sea and Caspian Sea.

Status and Conservation

Insufficiently known.

Israel.

In Israel subspecies Phalacrocorax pygmaeus. Winter and summer visitor and re-establish breeder.
