Descriptive notes.35 cm, 120 gr, wingspan 55 cm. legs variable shade of yellow or green. Base of bill and lores range in colour from lemon yellow to orange yellow.Female can have more contrasted plumage. Juvenile as adult female, but more heavily streaked overall. Races separated on measurements and coloration of head, neck and upperwing. Habitat.From dense forest to deserts and from lowlands to hills.Fresh water, areas with aquatic vegetation or on forested margins of shallow rivers, streams, pools, ponds, lakes, swamps and mangroves. Food and FeedingVery varied diet, including Fish, frogs, spiders, small reptiles and birds.Feeds around dawn and dusk but can feed during day. Mainly feeds alone like all Ixobrychus, by standing motionless or "walking slowly" partially hidden amidst vegetation. Breeding.May-Jul in Palearctic and India, in tropical Africa related to rains in Australia Oct-Jan.Nest in aquatic vegetation but alternatively low in bushes or trees, reedbeds. 2-9 eggs, incubation 16-21 days. chicks have redish buff down with below. Movements.Post-breeding dispersal in all directions also migrates S from Palearctic towards tropical Africa, the migration mostly nocturnal but can be diurnal. Populations of Middle East partly sedentary with in flux in winter.In Australia moves from S to N Australia apparently sedentary. Status and Conservation.Not globally threatend. Has declined since middle of century in parts of W Palearctic.Israel.In Israel subspecies I. m. minutus. uncommon to quite common passage migrant, very rare over winter also scarce summer visitor and quite rare breeder mainly in north. |
