Subspecies and Distribution.
A. p. purpurea Palearctic, part of North Africa, Iran.
A. p. madagascariensis Madagascar.
A. p. manilensis S E Asia, Indonensia and Philippines.

Descriptive notes.

600-1350 gr, 85 cm; wingspan 145 cm.
Bill proportionally longer than in most members of Ardea.
Juvenil more uniform brown and buff,with streaked breast, lacking neck stripes and elongated plumes of crown and scapulars.
Races separated by extent of black steaking on neck.

Habitat.

> Shallow freshwter swamps with dense marshy vegetation. mainly reed beds, river margins, lake shores, mangroves and coastal mud flats.

Food and Feeding

Fish, lizards, snakes, frogs, crabs, small birds, and also mammals.
Passive feeder, waits motionless hidden in vegetation waiting for prey to approach.
Defends feeding territory. Feeds mainly at dawn and dusk but also during day.

Breeding.

Apr-Jun in Palearctic Jun-Oct in India.
Colonial of small groups, nest over or beside water in flooded reed beds at a height of up to 3 m.
2-8 eggs incubation 26 days, chicks have dark brown down, white below. Fledging 45-50 days.

Movements.

Palearctioc birds migratory wintering in Africa a few in Mediterranean Basin, Middle East and Pakistan.
Birds breeding in Asia migrante to Korea, China, Thailand and Malaysia.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatend.Widespread and locally common in africa.

Israel.

In Israel subspecies A. p. purpurea. passage migrant, winter visitor and summer breeder.
