Subspecies and Distribution.
Egretta ardesiaca Africa S of Sahara except Congo, found in Madagascar.

Descriptive notes.

60 cm; the blackest of Egretta.
Broad flight feathers are special adaptation to feeding technique, dense, shaggy nuchal crest.
Feet red courtship, the tarsi remain wholly black.
Juvenil duller and browner and lacks long plumeg.

Habitat.

Common on fresh waters, shallow lake sides, ponds, flooded plains, marshes, alcaline lakes, mangroves and tidal flats.

Food and Feeding

Fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects.
Catches prey by means of characteristic "Canopy Feeding" (were the bird stretches its wings forwards until they touch and form a canopy over its head, with the tips fo the wings reaching the surtace of the water. That enable the birds to localize Their victims more easily.

Breeding.

Generally around onset of rains and period of flooding.
Colonial nests mixed with other herons, ibises, cormorants or darters. Nes of sticks usually up to 6 m up tree.
2-4 eggs chicks have dark grey down.

Movements.

Sedentary, some local movements.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatend. Abundant in Africa.

Israel.

In Israel subspeciesEgretta ardesiaca accidental visitor one observed near Eilat on 1982.
