Subspecies and Distribution.
Leptoptilos crumeniferusTropical Africa.

Descriptive notes.

145 cm, 7 kg wingspan 280cm. male larger. Immature has duller upperparts and more feathering on neck.

Habitat.

Found in open areas, dry savanna, swamps, river banks, lake shores.
Typically in and around fishing villages, also slaughterhouses and rubbish dumps.

Food and Feeding

Carrion and scraps of fish and other food discarded by humans, small mammals, large insects, reptiles, fish etc.
The bill is not well designed for dismembering carcasses, so normally steals scraps from vultures or snatches up morsels that are dropped. Fishes with submerged bill partly open,probably by touch, sometimes walks about shallows, repeatedly jabbing bill into water.

Breeding.

Usually begins in dry season and ends in rains.
Colonies 50 pairs sometimes several thousand., often mixed with other species.
Nest usually in trees 10-30 m off ground, on cliffs and even in main streets of towns.
2-3 eggs, incubation 31 days. chicks have pale grey.
Sexual maturity at 4 year old.
Movements.
Many sedentary especially in urbanized districts, others locally nomadic.
In dry season in W Africa some movement S into wetter savanna. Vegrant to Istael also in Spain.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatened.

Israel.

In Israel the subspecies Leptoptilos crumeniferus accidental.
