Subspecies and Distribution.
Geronticus eremitaBreeds Morocco, Algeria and SE Tutkey, wintering in Arabia, Ethiopia and Somalia
Formerly more widespread in Near and Middle East also in Alps and S Europa.

Descriptive notes.

75 cm, wingspan 130 cm. Bill can be ceeper red.
Immature duller, less glossy, lacks coppery wing patch, feathered head and neck appear greyish, with less elongated nape feathers.

Habitat.

Arid and sami-arid plains and plateaux with rocky escarpments.
Nests and roosts in cliffs, adjacent to watercourses or along the sea. Sometimes nesting on top of old buildings.

Food and Feeding

Insects: grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, locusts and small reptiles, frogs and fish.
Usually feeds in small, loose flocks.

Breeding.

Usually begins mid Feb, colonies of 5-40 pairs.
Nest is loose platform of branches lined with grass and straw.
2-4 eggs, incubation 43-47 days. chicks have greyish brown down above, paler below .
Sexual maturity at 3 year old.

Movements.

E population migratory, wintering areas not well known but largely in NE Africa thought to be chiefly in highlands of Ethiopia.
W population dispersive S after breeding, but most birds winter in Morocco.

Status and Conservation.

Endangered main causes of decline were intensive use of pesticides and human disturbance.

Israel.

In Israel the subspecies Geronticus eremita accidental.
