Subspecies and Distribution.
Plegadis falcinellusBreeds S Europa, Africa, C S Asia, Philippines, New Guinea and Australia.
N America to West Indies and Venezuela.

Descriptive notes.

60 cm, wingspan 95 cm. Bill color grey or brownish, legs very dark brown to olive brown.
non-breeding adulet duller, dark brown with head and neck finely but densely streaked whitish.

Habitat.

Lakes, swamps, lagoons, sewage ponds, rivers wet meadows and irrigated cultivation.
Roosting sites in large trees often far from water. Nests in freshwater or brackish wetlands, usually in tall dense trees or in low trees or bushes over or near water.

Food and Feeding

Insects: grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, locusts and small reptiles, frogs and fish.
Usually feeds in small flocks by "walks slowly" and probes bill into mud and shallow water, or takes prey from surface sometimes runs after prey.

Breeding.

May in Black Sea area, Mar-May in North America, during rains or just after in most of Africa.
Nest is compact platform of twigs or reeds lined with leaves.
3-4 eggs, incubation 20-23 days. chicks have sooty black down.

Movements.

Migratory and dispersive, post-breeding dispersal of adults and young birds in all directions. In Europe migrates S in autumn mostly to Africa. In S Africaa, some birds sedentary and some disperse N after breeding. In Australia birds breeding in S migrate N in winter.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatened. Marked contraction of range in W Palearctic during 20th centuty.

Israel.

In Israel the subspecies Plegadis falcinellus Common passage migrant, uncommon to common in summer and uncommon local breeder.
