Subspecies and Distribution.
Tadorna ferruginea S E Europe to Mongolia. N W Africa, Ethiopia.

Descriptive notes.

65 cm, 900-1500 g. Female slightly smaller, lacking narrow black neck-ring, paler face. Juvenile duller with white upperwing coverts tinged sooty greyish head.

Habitat.

Favours a diversity of water bodies of brackish nature, in open country, with sparsely forested.

Food and Feeding

Mainly vegetarian especially grass, seeds, leaves and stims of plant also animal such as worms and locusts.
Forages mainly by grazing on pasture and arable land.

Breeding.

Mar-Apr, in single paers or loose groups.
.Nest of reed stems and grass, lined with down, on ground among vegetion in holes or in trees.
6-9 eggs, incubation 29 days. Chicks have dark brown down white below and spots on back. Sexual maturity 2 years.

Movements.

Asian population migratory. Movings Sto winter at lower latitudes of India.
Other populations sidntary or only dispersive, some old records vagrants in several parts of Europe.

Status and Conservation.

Not globaly threatened. Has declined markedly in W of range.

Israel.

In Israel the subspecies Tadorna ferruginea Quite rare passage migrant and winter visitor, where formerly breed.
