Subspecies and Distribution.
Tadorna tadorna N W Europe, Mediterranean sites to C Asia, China, Iran and Afganistan.

Descriptive notes.

62 cm, 800-1500 g. Female slightly smaller, less knob on bill and usually some with between bill and eye. Juvenile with largely white underparts and grey or dull black dorsal parts, lacks chestnut breast band,and has white cheeks and throat.

Habitat.

Favours coastal mudflats and estuaries of salt water particularly in Europe, but seeking fresh water as well in order to drink.

Food and Feeding

Mainly aquatic invertebrates, with predilection for salt-water snail, some small fish and spawn, worms and plant materials.
Forages by digging dabbling on exposed mud and by head dipping and upending in shallow water.

Breeding.

Apr-May, in single pairs or small groups.
.Nest made of grass, bracken, or moss, lined with down, in hollow trees or rabbit burrows.
8-10 eggs, incubation 30 days. Chicks have dark down white below. Sexual maturity 2 years (female) 4-5 years (male).

Movements.

Northern population migratory. Movings S to winter at lower latitudes.
Even within mainly sedentary populations. Some spectacular gatherings at moulting sites, in some cases requiring extensive flights.

Status and Conservation.

Not globaly threatened. Widespread and fairly abundant.

Israel.

In Israel the subspecies Tadorna tadorna Common passage migrant,winter and summer visitor.
