Subspecies and Distribution.
Cairina moschata Tropical America from Mexico S to E Peru and N Uruguay.

Descriptive notes.

66-84 em; 1100-4000 g. Unmistakable. Amount of white on upperwing-coverts varies with age. Female smaller with totally feathered face, lacking prominent knob on bill. Juvenile has considerably less iridescent plumage overall, and has little or no white on upperwing

Habitat.

Well wooded tropical wetlands, preferably in lowlands; occasionally on coastal lagoons or marshes. Breeds mostly by or near slow-flowing rivers.

Food and Feeding

Mixture of vegetable and animal foods. Roots, seeds, stems and leaves of grasses, sedges and aquatic plants, small vertebrates (fish, reptiles) and invertebrates (insects, arachnids, crustaceans), with special predilection for termites. Feeds by dabbling and upending in shallow water and by grazing on land.

Breeding.

Season variable, but mostly during period of rains. In single pairs, nests in tree-hollows or cavities, with little or no down added. Generally 8-15 eggs. Incubation c. 35 days (captivity).

Movements.

Mainly sedentary, but subject to local movements linked with water availability during dry season, with occasional appearances outside normal breeding range. Has occurred in USA (Texas), Trinidad, coastal Peru and Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatened. Widespread, but only locally common.

Israel.

In Israel Cairina moschata First observation as a feral was on 1990 in Tel Aviv area. Now they observe in some fish pond in all the country. .
