Descriptive notes.46 cm, 400-1000 g. Male has eclipse plumage. Female slightly smaller and her head color not contrasting with breast and upperparts.Juvenile similar to female. Habitat.Lagoons, shallow freshwater marshes and lakes surrounded by forest.Winters in freshwater or brackish lagoons, bays and other sheltered marine habitats. Food and FeedingMainly vegetarian, leaves, stems, roots and seeds of grasses and aquatic vegetation.Feeds by grazing on dry land, and head dipping in shallow water. Breeding.Apr-May, in single pairs or small groups.Nest lined with grass and a thick coat of down, hidden among vegetation. 8-9 eggs, incubation 25 days. Chicks have dark brown down paler below. Sexual maturity 1 year. Movements.Migratory. Movings S to winter at lower latitudes throughout most of W C Europe Mediterranean Basin, Middle East, india and Japan. Some populations sedentary.Status and Conservation.Not globaly threatened. Widespread and fairly abundant.Israel.In Israel the subspecies Anas penelope Common passage migrant,winter and summer visitor. |
