Descriptive notes.51 cm, 850-1000 g. Male has eclipse plumage. Female with variable bill, sometimes uniformly dark.Juvenile resembles female but darker and more heavily streaked below. Habitat.Various types of freshwater or brackish wetlands, particularly shallow with abundant vegetation.Food and FeedingMainly vegetarian, leaves, stems, roots and seeds of grasses and aquatic vegetation.Food normally obtained under water by head-dipping and upending. Sometimes feeds by grazing on dry land. Breeding.Apr-May, in single pairs or small groups.Nest is made with grass and leaves, lined with down, on ground, hidden among vegetation. 8-12 eggs, incubation 25 days. Chicks have sepia colored down buff below. Sexual maturity 1 year. Movements.Northernmost breeding birds Movings S to winter at lower latitudes, but breeders of mor temperate regions mostly sedentary.Status and Conservation.Not globaly threatened. Widespread and fairly abundant.Israel.In Israel the subspecies Anas strepera Uncommon passage migrant,winter and summer visitor. |
