Subspecies and Distribution.
A. p. platyrhynchos Palearctic and Nearctic. A. p. conboschas S W Greenland. A. p. fulvigula Florida.
A. p. maculosa S USA to Mexico. A. p. diazi Arizona, Texas to Mexico. A. p. wyvilliana Hawaii.
A. p. laysanensis Laysan Is. (Hawaii).

Descriptive notes.

50-65 cm, 800-1500 g. wingspan 90 cm. Male has eclipse plumage. Females very variable. Juvenile resembles female but darker with more streaked underparts.
Subspecies vary in size and coloration.

Habitat.

Every wetland within range, Various types of brackish, salt or fresh waters. Avoids fast flowing and oligotrophic waters.
Out of breeding season also on coast, estuaries, bays and other sheltered sites. Usually in lowlands. Very tolerant of human presence.

Food and Feeding

Omnivorous. Aquatic and crop vegetative, leaves, stems, roots and seeds. Many terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates in spring and summer.
Feeds in groups by dabbling, head-dipping and diving in shallow water.

Breeding.

> Feb-Jun, in single pairs or loose groups.
Nest is bowl of grass in ground, lined with fethers and down, hidden among vegetation or in cavity.
9-13 eggs, incubation 27 days. Chicks have dark brown down, yellowish face. Sexual maturity 1 year.

Movements.

Northernmost breeding birds movings S to winter at lower latitudes, but breeders of mor temperate regions mostly sedentary.

Status and Conservation.

Not globaly threatened. Widespread and fairly abundant, one of most abundant ducks.

Israel.

In Israel the subspecies A. p. platyrhynchos Very common passage migrant and winter visitor, quite common summer visitor and uncommon breeder. Throughout country.
