Subspecies and Distribution.
Cygnus olorBritish Is, C N Europe to china. Feral populations in N America, S Africa and Australia and New Zealand.

Descriptive notes.

150 cm, 6,5-15 kg, wingspan 240 cm. Female smaller and less knob on bill.
Juvenile can be white but normally has variable amounts or brownish feathers and small knob on bill.

Habitat.

Found in a variety of lowland freshwater marshes, lagoons and rivers. Has adapted to living close to man, now occupying many artificial water bodies, like park lakes, reservoirs, gravel pits, etc.

Food and Feeding

Primarily leafy parts of aquatic vegetation and grain, grasses, small amphibians and aquatic invertebrates.
Feeds mostly by dabbing on water surface and upending, seldom diving.

Breeding

During the local spring, generally in isolated pairs in well-defended territories.
Nest is large mound of vegetation, floating on water or among reeds.
5-7 eggs, incubation 35 days. Chicks have grey down above, white below. Sexual maturity 3 years old.

Movements.

European and feral popu;ations mostly sedentary, males defending territory for most of year.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatened. Range increasing due mainly to establishment of feral populations.
