Descriptive notes.45-55 cm, 400-1000 g. wingspan 70-85 cm. Green speculum, with light blue upperwing coverts and orange legs.Female similar to that of A. platyrhynchos except in bill and upperwing. Juvenile resembles, female, though darker above and with a duller upperwing. Habitat.Variety of shallow, freshwater wetlands, preferably well vegetated lakes and marshes with muddy shores in open country.Winters on brackish lagoons and tidal mud flats. Food and FeedingVaried diet, Green part of aquatic plants and grass , leaves, stems, roots and seeds, Many terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates and insects.Feeds by dabbling and water filtering from surface, head dipping and upending also dives in shallow waters. Breeding.Apr-May, in single pairs.Nest is depression grass lined with feathers and down. 9-11 eggs, incubation 21-23 days. Chicks have dark olivaceous brown down above, buffesh below. Sexual maturity at 1 year. Movements.Migratory. S to winter at lower latitudes in USA, C America, Mediterranean basin, Middle East, India and S E Asia.Status and Conservation.Not globaly threatened.
