Marmaronetta angustirostris S Spain and N Africa through Middle East to W China. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.40-48 cm, 450-600 g. Light speculum with light colored spots.Female with less evident crest on nape and often with a greenish yellow mark at base of bill. Juvenile is more uniform on underparts and has less distinctly mottled sides and upperparts. Habitat.Variety of freshwater or shallow brackish pools, and marshes with abundant vegetaion in arid country.Food and FeedingVaried diet, Green part of aquatic plants and grass , leaves, stems, roots and seeds, Many terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates and insects.Feeds by mud-filtering from shore, dabbling at water surface and upending, also dives in shallow waters. Breeding.Apr-May, in single pairs.Nest is depression on ground with grass lined with down among vegetation near water. 7-14 eggs, incubation 26 days. Chicks have dark fawn brown down above, pale yellowish below.Sexual maturity at 1 year. Movements.Dispersive and migratory. In winter can be found at a number of sites around Mediterranean basin, sub Sahara, Middle East and N W India.Status and Conservation.Vulnerable. Global estimation 20,000 birds.
