Subspecies and Distribution.
Aythya ferina Iceland and W E urope through C Asia, USSR to N E China.

Descriptive notes.

55 cm, 1000 g. Very similar to A. americana, but shape of head different. Male has red iris and different pattern on bill.
Female has different bill color and whiter flanks.
Juvenile very similar to female but has more mottled underparts.

Habitat.

Vegetated swamps, marshes, lakes and slow flowing rivers with areas of open water.
In winter, opten on larger lakes, brackish coastal lagoons and tidal estuaries.

Food and Feeding

Green part of aquatic plants and grass , leaves, stems, roots and seeds. Occasionally aquatic invertebrates and insects amphibians and small fish.
Feeds by diving, upending head-dipping and dabbling also filters mud on shore.

Breeding.

Apr-May, in single pairs.
Nest is depression in thick heap of grass, reed stems and leaves, lined with down, on ground or water.
8-10 eggs, incubation 26 days. Chicks have brown down upperparts, and yellow on underparts, face and dorsal spots.

Movements.

Migratory. Present throughout year in temperate regions but northernmost population winters in Mediterranean basin, S W USSR, Middle East and sub Saharan Africa. Vagrant to Faeroes, Azores, Canary and Cape Verde Is. also to Philippines and Hawaii.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatened. Abundant.

Israel.

In Israel the subspecies Aythya ferina Common passage migrant and winter visiter, very rare summer visiter.
