Descriptive notes.38-42 cm, 400-650 g. Male has small white spot on chin, blackish collar and eclipse plumage.Female duller, browner with inconspicuous small white spots on throat. Juvenile very similar to female but lacks white undertail-coverts and has silvery brown underparts with blackish barring on breast. Habitat.Shallow pools and marshes with abundant emergent and shoreline vegetation.Outsice breeding season may frequent larger lakes and lagoons and coastal marshes. Food and FeedingGreen part of aquatic plants and grass , leaves, stems, roots and seeds. Occasionally aquatic invertebrates and insects amphibians and small fish.Feeds by diving, upending head-dipping and dabbling also filters mud on shore. Breeding.Apr-May, in single pairs.Nest is depression in thick heap of grass, reed stems and leaves, lined with down, on ground or water. 8-10 eggs, incubation 26 days. Chicks have brown down upperparts, and yellow on underparts, face and dorsal spots. Sexual maturity at 1 year. Movements.Migratory. winters in Mediterranean basin, Caspian Sea, Middle East and sub Saharan Africa. Records outside regular range, particularly in N W Europe.Status and Conservation.Not globally threatened.Israel.In Israel the subspecies Aythya nyroca Uncommon passage migrant and winter visiter, fairly rare breeder. |
