Descriptive notes.40-45 cm, 1000-1500 g. Male has long black crest, that's unique among pochards, and eclipse plumage.Female very variable, has short crest, yellow eye and white area on underparts which does not reach as far as flanks. Juvenile very similar to female, but young male has darker head and somewhat vermiculated back patterning. Habitat.Large, deep freshwater lakes, ponds and reservoirs with open waters and islands for breeding. also on wide, sluggish rivers.In winter on brackish lagoons and tidal bays. Food and FeedingGreen part of aquatic plants and grass , leaves, stems, roots and seeds. Occasionally aquatic invertebrates and insects .Feeds by diving, upending head-dipping and dabbling. Breeding.May, in single pairs.Nest made of grass and sedges, lined with down, on ground among vegetation of in open, preferably on islands. 8-10 eggs, incubation 23-28 days. Chicks have sooty brown down above, and pale yellow on underparts and face. Sexual maturity at 1 to 2 years. Movements.Migratory. winters C and N W Europe, Mediterranean basin, Middle East and sub Saharan Africa. USSR, S E Asia, Indian Subcontinent to Japan. Records in Alska and N America.Status and Conservation.Not globally threatened. One of few Aythya species known to have large populations.Israel.In Israel the subspecies Aythya fuligula Common passage migrant and winter visiter, very rare breeder. |
