Descriptive notes.40-60 cm, 650-800 g. Male has eclipse plumage, attained in winter brightest plumage, in summer, darker, with white of head and neck becoming dark brown, also acquires feathers similar to the female's on back.Female is darker in summer, especially on face. Juvenile resembles female, but has sides of breast dark brown and lacks brownish black mark on sides of face. Habitat.Breeds on small tundra lakes, pools, bogs, rivers and coastal sites of high Arctic. Winters mostly at sea, far offshore, but also inland in large, deep freshwater lakes or brackish lagoons.Food and FeedingMostly marine invertebrates, molluscs, crustaceans also fish.In fresh water, insects also a little plant material.. Feeds by diving. Breeding.May-Jun, in single pairs .Nest is natural depression lined with surrounding plant material and down, on ground, among vegetation. 6 -9 eggs, incubation 24-29 days.
