Subspecies and Distribution.
M. f. Fusca. Scandinavia to E Yenisey river, C Siberia.
M. f. StejnegeriI. Yenisey basin to Kamchatka to Mongolia.
M. f. deglandi. Alaska and Canda, to Hudson bay.

Descriptive notes.

50-58 cm, 1200-1800 g. Recognizable in flight by conspicuous white secondaries and greater coverts which form square wing bar.
Juvenile resembles female, paler onbreast with whiter and larger pale head markings
Subspecies separated by shape and color of bill.

Habitat.

Breeds on small freshwater bodies: lakes, pools, bogs, rivers of boreal forest and Arctic tundra. Winters mostly at sea.

Food and Feeding

Mostly marine invertebrates, molluscs, crustaceans also fish.
In fresh water, insects also a little plant material..
Feeds by diving, occasionally also dabbles on surface.

Breeding.

May-Jun, in single pairs .
Nest is shallow depression lined with surrounding plant material and down, on ground, among vegetation.
7 -9 eggs, incubation 28 days. Chicks have dark brown down above, and whith below.
Sexual maturity at 2-3 years.

Movements.

Migratory. winters on Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America as far S as Baja California, also in most of Europe to Mediterranean, black and Caspian Seas and N E Asia to Japan and China.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatened. Widespread and locally abundant.

Israel.

In Israel the subspecies M. f. Fusca Occasional and accidental winter visiter.
