Descriptive notes.70-85 cm, 750-1300 g. wingspan 70-85 cm. Male has eclipse plumage. Female resembles that of M. merganser, but crest and pattern of secondary different, white on throat reaches breast.Juvenile resembles female, but with shorter crest and plumage generally darker grey. HabitatBreeds on rather deep lakes and small rivers, often, but not necessarily, in wooded country. In winters mostly at sea, frequenting both inshore and offshore waters, estuaries bays, and brackish lagoons.Food and FeedingFresh-water or marine fish, aquatic invertebrates and some plant material.Feeds by diving, from surface after scanning with head submerged. Breeding.Apr-Jun, in single pairs or large groups, locally in colonies.Nest made of grass lined down, on ground, gernerally well concealed. 8-10 eggs, incubation 31 days. Chicks have brownish down above, whith below. Sexual maturity at 2 years. Movements.Migratory. winters along Atlantic and Pacific coasts of N America, Mediterranean basin, S USSR, E China, Korea and Japan.Present all year round in much of Europe, Iceland and Greenland. Males tend to remain closer to breeding grounds than females or immatures.
