Subspecies and Distribution.
A. f. fabalis taiga from Scandinavia E to Ural Mts. A. f. johanseni taiga and wooded tundra from Ural Mts to L Baikal. A. f. middendoiffii taiga of E Siberia, E of L Baikal. A. f. rossicus tundra of N Russia and NW Siberia, from Kanin to Taymyr peninsulas. A. f. serrirostris tundra of NE Siberia, from Lena Delta to Anadyrland. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.66-90 cm, 3-4 kg, wingspan 140-175 cm. Juvenile as adult though duller and with less conspicuous light edging on mantle. Subspecies vary in colour and structure; two extremes are: rossicus, small, strong-billed with short neck and legs and middendoiffii, large, with longer neck and legs and more slender bill.Habitat.Breeds on lakes, pools and rivers in high Arctic or taiga zone, according to subspecies. Winters in open country, on marshes or agricultural land.Food and FeedingMostly vegetarian; herbs, grasses and sedges. also berries during breeding season and grain, beans and potatoes in winter.Generally forages on foot on dry land. BreedingStarts May/Jun. In single pairs or loose groups; builds shallow nest of vegetation, lined with down, in scrape in ground. Usually 4-6 eggs (3-8)Incubation c. 27-29 days. Chicks have olive-brown down above, yellowish below. fledging c. 40 days. Sexual maturity at 2-3 years. Movements.Migratory, winters mostly on coastal plains in NW and Central Europe and E Asia.Sporadically in more southern latitudes during cold winters. Status and Conservation.Not globally threatened. Widespread and numerous.Israel.In Israel the subspecies A. f. rossicus Accidental, one fined and photographed in Eilat on 16.03.2007 by Jonathan Meyrav. |
