Descriptive notes.65-85 cm, 2-3 kg, wingspan 155 cm. reminiscent of A. erythropus but larger, paler and with less white on forehead.Juvenile lacks black ventral markings and white facial patch and has less conspicuous white markings on flanks and upper surfaces. Habitat.Breeds in open tundra near marshes, lakes, pools and rivers near coast as well as inland.Winters in open country, on steppe and farmland, or in marshy habitats. Food and FeedingVarious plants: roots, leaves, stems and seeds also grain, potatoes and sprouting cereals in winter,.Forages mostly by grazing on dry land. BreedingMay-Jun in single pairs.Shallow nest of vegetation, sparsely lined with down and feathers, on ground. 5-6 eggs, incubation 22-28 days. Chicks have brownish olive down pale grey below. Sexual maturity 3 years. Movements.Migratory, spends winter months in fixed areas at lower latitudes. Mostly in temperate Europe, Asia and N America.Occasionally further S during cold winters. Status and Conservation.Not globally threatened. Generally widespread and abundant.Israel.In Israel the subspecies A. a. albifrons Passage migrant, rare to uncommon winter visitor. |
