Descriptive notes.55-65 cm, 2,3 kg, wingspan 130 cm. reminiscent of A. albifrons but smaller, has yellow eye-ring, more white on forehead and darker head, neck and upperparts.Female smaller. Juvenile lacks white forehead, black spotting underneath and transverse lines on upperparts. Habitat.Prefer Arctic open habitats, particularly scrub-covered and lightly wooded tundra near taiga zone, lakes and slopes in mountain regions.Winters mostly on dry ground. Food and FeedingVarious plants: roots, leaves, stems of grasses,Feeds mostly on land, by grazing.Breeding.May-Jun in single pairs.Shallow depression nest on ground, lined with grass, moss and down. 5-6 eggs, incubation 25-28 days. Chicks have dark brown down yellowish below. Sexual maturity 3 years. Movements.Migratory, main wintering areas on coastal plains of Caspian and Black Seas and in China.Status and Conservation.Rare. Marked decline during present century, of up to 95% in places, causes not well known.Israel.In Israel the subspecies Anser erythropus Accidental, mainly during winter. |
