Subspecies and Distribution.
H. f. fasciatus NW Africa and Iberian Peninsula throug Mediterranean, Arabia to Afganistan, Pakistan and India, through Indochina and China.
H. f. renschi Sumbawa, Timor, wetar and Flores (Indonesia Islands).

Descriptive notes.

65-70 cm,1600-2500 g wingspan 150-180 cm.
Contrast below between predominantly dark underwing and white, lightly streaked underparts, with blackish median band. Conspicuous white patch on back, tail with terminal dark band.
Female larger, with more heavily streaked underparts.
Juvenile darker brown above, with rusty underparts and underwing coverts, lacks white patch on back and tail band.
Race renschi smaller, more barred on wing and tail feathers.

Habitat.

Warm and sunny Mountains or broken terrain with crags and cliffs.
Vegetation cover variable, maquis, forest, but also barren slopes with virtually no vegetation.
Mainly at low or medium altitudes.

Food and Feeding

The main prey are medium sized mammals and birds, but adaptable eating most readily available prey.

In Israel takes mainly partridges and pigeons, with few mammals or reptiles.
Very agile flight, capturing most of prey on ground, but also birds in flight, sometimes pairs hunt together.

Breeding.

Feb in Mediterranean region, Dec in India Subcontinent.
Bulky nest of sticks, lined with green leaves, on a cliff ledge, rarely in a tree, up to 2 m wide and 1 m deep.
2 eggs, incubation 37-41 days, mainly by female, chicks brooded and fed by female, at first only male brings prey to nest.
Chicks have firs and scond down white.
Sexual maturity at 2 years. Recorede up 20 years old in captivity.

Movements.

Sedentary and dispersive. Breeding pairs closely tied to home range, although somewhat less outside breeding season.
Juveniles disperse once independent, tend to move to areas not occupied by adults.

Status and Conservation.

Not globally threatened. In decline in europe.

In Israel the subspecies H. f. fasciatus. Quite rare local resident and rare inter visitor.
