Descriptive notes.28-35 cm,130-340 g wingspan 70-85 cm.Pale throat and cheeks contrast with densely streaked whitish of buff underparts, red thighs and nundertail coverts. Female slightly larger, juvenile browner and with pale feather edges above, buff undertaiil coverts and thighs, pale crown. Habitat.Open wooded areas, wooded steppes, pastures, cultivation with clumps of trees, fields with hedges of woods.From boreal forests to arid areas. Mainly at low altitudes in plains or foothills, but also in mountains. Sometimes in suburbs of cities. Food and FeedingMainly insects, especially flying insects which are taken and eaten on the wing.Many small birds during breeding season, include swallows, martins and swifts. Few other vertebrates, although bats and lizards. Captures prey mainly in air, able to catch very agile birds due to fast, acrobatic flight. Very active at dawn and dusk. Breeding.Jun-Jul, solitary. Lays in unoccupied nests of crows and magpies or other raptors often in pine trees. Nest site may be reused each year.3 eggs, incubation 27-33 days, mainly by female. Chicks have pale creamy buff first down, greyer second down. Sexual maturity at 2 yaer old. Movements.Migratory, but, streichi sedentary. Wintering generally rare in Palearctec, mainly winters in Africa with bulk of numbers in S of continent, arriving mainly in Nov.Birds in Indian Subcontinent and S China, alongside resident population. Normally returns to breeding areas in late Apr. Status and Conservation.Not globally threatened. Population levels and trends not well known.Israel.In Israel subspecies F. s. subbuteo. Scace to uncommon passage migrant and fairly common breeding summer visitor. |
