Descriptive notes.35 cm, 420-480 g wingspan 50-55 cm.Differs from other "spotted" francolins, by chestnut on sides and back of neck, and black throat. Female paler withe throat. Juveniles similar to adult female, with more uniform plumage. Races separated on size and general tone of plumage coloration, bogdanovi palest. Habitat.Inhabits range of well-watered habitats from alluvial riverbanks and tall grass to jungle cultivation mosaics along canals and other watercourses, and irrigated forest plantations.Food and FeedingDiet seeds grasses, weeds and cereal crops, leaves, tubers, berries and figs, also a range of insects and their larvae, especially termites.Breeding.Mar-Oct in S Asia, mainly Apr in S parts, Jun-Jul in W and C.Sep in drier areas in India, and Apr-Aug in extreme of range. Mar-May in Turkey and Iraq and Mar-Aug in Israel. Nests made by female, concealed amongst vegetation, even in cultivation. 7-12 eggs, incubation 18-20 days, by female. Downy chicks are pale buff, with rufous cinnamon crown and streak over centre of back. Movements.Sedentary. Easy to flush, flying 300 m with strong quick wingbeats, before landing to run off . Will run if chased.Status and Conservation.Not globally threatened. Very widely distributed.Israel.In Israel subspecies F. f. francolinus. Fairly common resident, from Hula valley in north through Golan, Jordan River Valley to Dead Sea Depression.
