Anthropoides virgoBlack Sea to Mongolia and NE China. Winters in Indian Subcontinent and in sub Sahran Africa from Chad to Ethiopia. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.90 cm, 2000-3000 g, wingspan 150-170 cm. Smallest crane, male slightly larger than female.Uniform grey, except for black head and neck, black-tipped secondaries, and distinctive white ear tufts extending from behind eye to upper nape, elongated black plumage of foreneck hangs down below breast. Iris reddish orange. Juvenile generally duller grey with paler head and neck. Ear tufts less distinct. Habitat.Savanna, steppe and other grassland types, often in close proximity to streams, shallow lakes and other wetlands.Inhabits semi-desert and true deserts where water is available. Food and FeedingPlant materials but mainly seeds, also insects, especially beetles in summer, worms, lizards and other small vertebrates.Walks slowly while foraging. Large flocks at migration staging areas in cultivated fields, sometimes causing damage to cereal and legume crops. Breeding.Mainly Apr-May, but as late as Jun in north.Nest is minimally prepared in open patches of grass, in cultivated areas, or on gravel, some plant material may be gathered, but eggs are often laid directly on ground. Usually 2 eggs, incubation 27-30 days. Chicks palebrown above, greyish white below. Sexual maturity by second year. Movements.Migratory, birds from W Eurasia winter in E sub Saharan Africa. Birds from C Asia, Mongolia and China winter in Indian Subcontinent. Small population of Atlas plateau may move to Cahd in winter.With possible exception of small population in Turkey. Status and Conservation.Not globally threatened. Current population estimated at 200,000-250,000 birds.Israel.In Israel subspecies Grus virgo. Very rare passage migrant, mainly on rapid active migration. |
